Constructed in 1848, the Greek Revival structure served as the Marengo county courthouse until 1903, except for a few years during Reconstruction when the county seat was moved to Demopolis.
After a newer courthouse was built in Linden, the building served as a school, a church, and an American Legion hall. The former Linden courthouse, which currently stands vacant, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
