The building houses both Columbus City Hall and the Muscogee County Courthouse, as it is home to the consolidated governments of the City of Columbus and Muscogee County. Residents of the city and county voted to consolidate in 1970.
The Columbus Consolidated Government Center, designed by E. Owen Smith and Biggers, Scarbrough, Neal, Crisp And Clark, was built in 1972.
