Originally built in 1904 and later substantially remodeled, the Alexandria courthouse, designed by W. R. Parsons And Son, was abandoned by the Hanson County government in 2008 after determining that the extensive renovations necessary to stabilize the building would have added only five more years to its anticipated lifespan.

The Hanson County Courthouse was destroyed by an intentionally-set, controlled fire on December 1, 2008.
