Noyes and completed in 1894, court sessions were held on the first floor, while the jail was located on the second floor. After completion of a newer, adjacent Garden City Courthouse in 1910, the building was converted entirely into a jail. The building remained active as a jail until 1980. In 1931, the Hamilton courthouse was reshaped by E.M. Miles into a Classical Revival structure in a remodeling which included the removal of the clock tower. The building was rededicated in 2012 after restoration efforts, led by Komatsu Architecture, which included the reinstallation of a clock tower.
