The original structure, designed by W.C. Dodson, opened in 1890 and was destroyed by fire on New Years Day 1993. The Hillsboro courthouse was rebuilt faithfully to restore its original appearance, and the new Hill County Courthouse opened to the public in 1999.
The Second Empire structure is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Texas Historic Landmark.
