Designed by George Hadfield, construction began on the Classical Revival structure, intended for use for the government of the District Of Columbia, in 1820. Over the years, the building served among its various uses as Washington City Hall and as a federal courthouse. The building was rededicated for its current use in 2009. The Washington courthouse is a National Historic Landmark.
