Cass Gilbert modeled the Beaux-Arts structure after Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The Minnesota State Capitol was constructed between 1896 and 1905 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Photos of the Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix. Designed by J. Riely Gordon and constructed between 1898 and 1901, the building served as the territorial capitol until Arizona was granted statehood in 1912. The building continued to serve as the state capitol, but the small and cramped nature of the building eventually forced all official government functions to be moved to adjoining buildings. Now a museum, the Arizona State Capitol is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Photos of the Colorado State Capitol in Denver. Designed by Elijah E. Myers, construction on the Classical Revival structure started in 1886 and lasted for 15 years, though many offices were occupied by 1894. The Colorado State Capitol is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Photos of the Hawaii State Capitol in Honolulu. Designed in a collaboration between John Carl Warnecke and Belt, Lemmon And Lo, the Hawaii State Capitol is surrounded by a reflecting pool, symbolizing the Pacific Ocean, with the rotunda opening to the sky. Both legislative chambers are cone-shaped, symbolizing the volcanoes which formed the Hawaiian Islands. The Hawaii State Capitol, completed in 1969, is part of the Hawaii Capital Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Photos of the Kansas State Capitol in Topeka. Designed by John G. Haskell and completed in 1903 after 37 years of construction, the Classical Revival structure, built with Kansas limestone, stands 306 feet from its base to the top of the statue atop the dome, 17 feet higher than the U.S. Capitol. The Kansas State Capitol is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Photos of the Maine State House in Augusta. Originally designed by Charles Bulfinch and completed in 1832, the Maine state capitol underwent a substantial renovation in 1910, with G. Henri Desmond leading the redesign. The Maine State House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Photos of the Maryland State House in Annapolis. Designed by Joseph Horatio Anderson and built between 1772 and 1779, the Georgian structure also served as the United States capitol from November 1783 through August 1784, the only state capitol to have so served. The oldest state capitol in continuous legislative use, the Maryland State House is a National Historic Landmark.
Photos of the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City. Designed by Joseph Gosling and completed in 1871, the Italianate structure was expanded in 1905 and completely rebuilt between 1977 and 1981. The Nevada State Capitol is one of three capitols in the nation in which the state legislature does not meet, as the legislature convenes in a separate building completed in 1971. The Nevada State Capitol is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Photos of the New Hampshire State House in Concord. Designed by Stuart James Park, the New Hampshire state capitol was constructed from 1816 to 1819. The New Hampshire State House, a Classical Revival structure and the oldest state capitol in which the legislature meets in its original chambers, is included in the Concord Civic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Originally designed by Jonathan Doane and completed in 1792, the building, which serves as the New Jersey state capitol, has been expanded and remodeled many times over the years. The New Jersey State House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Photos of the New Mexico State Capitol in Santa Fe. Also known as the Roundhouse, the structure was designed by W.C. Kruger and completed in 1966. The New Mexico State Capitol, which incorporates traditional New Mexico territorial style elements, has a round shape inspired by the Zia sun symbol, which also appears in the state flag.
Photos of the New York State Capitol in Albany. Three teams of architects designed the building over its construction period, which stretched from 1867 through 1899. The New York State Capitol, which incorporates both Renaissance Revival and Romanesque Revival elements, is a National Historic Landmark.
