Sumner is one of two county seats for Tallahatchie County; Charleston is also a county seat and has its own courthouse.

The Sumner courthouse, designed by William S. Hull, was built in 1910 and was the site of the Emmett Till murder trial in 1955.  The Tallahatchie County Courthouse, a brick Romanesque Revival structure, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
